Forty years ago, Fr. Mathew Lewis landed in Mundgod, to start a new area of work of the Karnataka Jesuit province. Those tiny steps over the years have reached many villages and moved on. In 1982, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) of Karnataka Province extended its mission from coastal Karnataka to North Karnataka identifying Mundgod Taluka of Uttara Kannada district as the base for launching its service among the Siddi, Gawli, Golla, Vaddar, Lamani, Koravar and Other Backward Communities. They have been actively carrying out pastoral, educational, social and healthcare ministries. Focus of the mission is “service of faith and promotion of justice through dialogue with the religions and culture.” The mission’s key focus is on formal and non-formal education, village conscientisation, health and social empowerment, besides taking care of the spiritual needs of the people.
